Before you begin: what are we adjusting?
The aim is to keep guides and chats manageable while the browser does its job. PC games such as Enlisted or War Thunder still run in their own clients; GX does not turn them into browser games. Observe your normal workload first. If everything works well, you do not need every limiter enabled. Changing one setting at a time makes the result easier to interpret.
Use the current desktop version. Menu names can differ by operating system, language and release. The illustration below is an interface diagram, not a screenshot.
Download Opera GX: six first-setup steps
- Open the official Opera GX page and choose the package for your operating system. Avoid similarly named download advertisements or third-party installers.
- Open the downloaded installer. Read its options and terms, and choose default-browser and import settings according to your needs.
- Try a few familiar websites on first launch. Before removing your old browser, check that bookmarks and essential sign-ins are available.
- Open Settings: Alt+P on Windows or ⌘+, on macOS. Use the settings search box to find the feature you need.
- Open GX Control from the sidebar. If its icon is missing, use the sidebar’s three-dot customisation menu to make GX Control visible.
- Open a guide, a chat and your usual video page. Observe this normal workload, then try only the resource limit you actually need.

Find the panel first, then choose the resource you want to manage. The numbers match the explanations below.
- Sidebar: open the GX Control panel here.
- Settings search: find VPN, import and appearance options by name.
- Resource limits: assess RAM, CPU and network use separately.
- Separate game client: outside the browser and outside its free browser VPN.

Enable the free VPN and understand its scope
Search Settings for VPN and enable the built-in free option. Check the connection and location through the VPN badge in the address bar. This is for browser traffic, not a way to reduce ping in a separate PC game. VPN Pro is a separate paid product. If site access or account location changes, review that service’s rules. A VPN does not replace account-security measures.
Example: game, guide and video open together
If a video stutters while the game stays smooth, check the browser limits first. A tight CPU or network limit can starve the video itself. Relax the limit and retry the same clip. Game stutter may instead involve drivers, graphics settings, temperature or connectivity. Comparing the same situation with the browser closed helps identify whether GX is involved at all.
Common setup mistakes
- Setting every limiter to its minimum: browser games and videos also need those resources.
- Deleting old browser data before checking imported bookmarks: verify the transfer first.
- Selecting every item in GX Cleaner or browsing-data deletion: cookies and sessions may be removed; review the categories.
- Treating the browser VPN as protection for the whole computer: separate games and other apps are outside its scope.
Find your setup: a short checklist
- Bookmark essential guides and close duplicate tabs.
- Note the current setting, then change a single limit.
- Compare responsiveness, video playback and connectivity with the same pages and game conditions.
- Restore the previous value if it does not help. Keep the setting that works reliably in daily use.

What are the best RAM and CPU limits?
There is no universal value. Hardware, tabs and game workload differ. Make small changes and observe; loosen or disable the limiter if the browser struggles.
Is Opera GX free, and will it definitely increase FPS?
The browser is free to use; paid extras are separate. No specific FPS increase is guaranteed. Resource controls depend on how much load the browser creates on your computer.
