Start with the problem you want to solve
Consider Opera One for everyday browsing and organising research tabs; consider Opera GX when you want controls for the resources your browser uses alongside games. Our recommendation is to choose by the features you will actually use, rather than simply calling yourself a gamer. Each product has its own download page. Check which installer you are getting. This is a decision guide based on official product information, not a benchmark.
Match the browser to your task
| Your need | First option to explore | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday work and research | Opera One | Can you find and reopen project pages more easily? |
| Managing a browser alongside a game | Opera GX with GX Control | Do its RAM, CPU and network limits suit your browsing? |
| Free VPN for web browsing | Opera GX browser VPN | Its scope is the browser, not a separately running PC game. |
Five steps from download to a daily setup
- Write down a small, realistic workload: three research tabs, a video and a game guide, for example. Use it for both trials.
- Open the chosen product’s page on opera.com. Select the package for your operating system; do not rely solely on the product name in an advertisement.
- Review installation choices. Keep your previous browser and its data. You do not need to import every extension and preference for an initial trial.
- Try the same pages in one browser at a time. Running both together confuses resource comparisons. In GX, observe the default behaviour before changing one limit.
- Check bookmarks, video playback, sign-ins and essential extensions. Consider importing data and changing your default browser after you decide the setup meets your needs.
A decision path from need to everyday use
- Identify the problem you want to solve.
- Choose the correct official product page.
- Try identical tasks separately.
- Keep the arrangement that works for you.
Example: leaving a guide open while playing Enlisted
Imagine keeping a map guide and a video page open before a match. First pause the video, close unneeded tabs and note which page you actually return to. On a second attempt, keep that arrangement and change just one GX setting. If the video struggles or tabs reload repeatedly, reconsider that limit. This is a personal trial plan, not evidence of an FPS increase in Enlisted. Installing the game is a separate task from installing a browser.
Before you download
Does the free VPN require VPN Pro?
No. The browser’s free VPN and paid VPN Pro are separate services. Do not interpret the free option as coverage for your entire computer or game connection.
Which browser uses less RAM?
There is no useful universal winner without controlling tabs, extensions and settings. Try the same workload in turn and judge whether pages still function well. We have not conducted a laboratory comparison for this article.
