Does local AI mean nothing ever leaves the browser?

No blanket promise follows from the word local. WebAI’s model inference runs on the device, so that operation does not require sending the input to a cloud AI provider. The surrounding website, extension and ordinary browser traffic are separate considerations. A local-model feature is not a declaration that every service in the browser is offline or that a page cannot transmit information for another purpose.

Availability checked on 29 October 2026

WebAI is an early preview. Opera’s press release says Opera One first, with GX and Neon to follow; its blog describes a preview across all three. Check the WebAI setting and the official playground in your own GX version before relying on it. The steps below apply only when your browser reports support.

This is a source-based guide with suggested exercises, not a hands-on benchmark. Diagrams show our workflow, not screenshots of the browser.

Model inferenceWhere is the AI request processed?Prefer the documented local option for your intended exercise.
Website or extensionWhat information can this tool access or transmit?Read its permissions and privacy explanation.
Internet connectionWhat else is the browser downloading or loading?A model download and a normal webpage still use the network.

An informed first-use checklist

  1. Choose a public text for the first test. Do not begin with account recovery details, passwords, payment information or private conversations.
  2. Read the feature name and the tool’s explanation. Make sure you are testing WebAI, rather than assuming an unrelated cloud chat panel uses the same processing route.
  3. Review the site-specific permission request. Grant access only for a task you actually want to perform; cancel an unexpected request and inspect the page first.
  4. For an extension, check the publisher and the scope of its access. Local processing by the model does not by itself explain every permission the extension requests.
  5. When finished, review the browser’s relevant site permissions and extension controls. You can turn WebAI off in its setting. Do not assume disabling a feature also deletes every downloaded file or previous website record.

A sensible boundary for game-related use

Public patch notes and your own non-sensitive practice notes are reasonable material for an initial exercise. A screenshot of an account page may also contain an email address, transaction detail or support token that has nothing to do with your question. Remove that material before using any tool. A question about redeeming a bonus rarely needs your login details; check eligibility on the publisher’s page yourself.

A privacy review workflow; not a security certification.
  1. Identify the information you want to process.
  2. Remove unrelated personal details.
  3. Check the tool and its permissions.
  4. Review access when the task is finished.

Local, free and private are different claims

Local describes where an operation runs. Free describes a price. Privacy depends on the complete handling of information. Opera’s announcement says a cloud AI subscription is not needed for this local preview; it does not establish the policy of every third-party tool. If you cannot tell what a site does with your text, choose a clearer example or stop the test. This guide explains product behavior and practical choices, not a legal compliance assessment.

Does WebAI replace the browser VPN?

No. Model processing and a VPN solve different problems. Enabling one does not enable the other or protect the entire computer’s traffic.

Will turning WebAI off erase everything?

Do not infer that. Feature availability, model storage, site data and extension data are separate; use the documented controls for the specific item you want to remove.
