Opera GX WebAI not showing or running slowly: a diagnostic checklist

Separate missing preview support, model downloads, site permissions and slow responses before reinstalling Opera GX or changing computer settings.

Start with the stage that failed

A missing setting, an unfinished model download and a slow answer are different situations. Record the browser version, operating system, processor family and exact message before changing anything. GX’s preview availability is not consistently described in Opera’s launch material, so an absent switch is not proof that your computer is broken. Use the official playground as a narrow check of the API you are trying to use.

Availability checked on 29 October 2026

WebAI is an early preview. Opera’s press release says Opera One first, with GX and Neon to follow; its blog describes a preview across all three. Check the WebAI setting and the official playground in your own GX version before relying on it. The steps below apply only when your browser reports support.

This is a source-based guide with suggested exercises, not a hands-on benchmark. Diagrams show our workflow, not screenshots of the browser.

Match the symptom to a useful check

Match the symptom to a useful check
SymptomCheck firstAvoid assuming
No WebAI optionBrowser version and announced platform supportThat reinstalling repeatedly will enable an unreleased feature.
Model not ready or API unavailableDownload status and the playground’s exact messageThat a visible chat box proves the model is ready.
Slow or incomplete outputShort input, competing tasks and tool behaviorThat a small response-time sample proves a hardware fault.

Work through one change at a time

  1. Confirm supported architecture: the announced preview covers 64-bit Intel/AMD Windows and Apple-silicon Macs. Normal Opera GX support on another platform does not establish WebAI support.
  2. Update through the official browser update mechanism, save your work and restart if requested. Check whether the setting appears before making unrelated system changes.
  3. If the setting exists, inspect model-download progress and any error. Keep a stable connection and check available disk space. Use the displayed requirement rather than an invented universal storage number.
  4. Try the official Prompt API playground with one short, non-sensitive sentence. Review permission prompts. If it works there but not in an extension, investigate that extension’s requirements and version.
  5. For slow output, stop unnecessary concurrent AI requests and heavy downloads. Retest the same short task between gaming sessions. Do not disable security protections or download an unofficial model-fix tool.

Make a small comparison log

Write down the input length, tool, browser version, whether another workload was running and what happened. Repeat with only one variable changed. For example, compare a short paragraph with a longer passage while leaving the tool unchanged. A longer task taking more time is not itself a failure. If an output stops mid-sentence, keep the exact message and shorten the input; avoid treating an incomplete answer as a verified summary.

A troubleshooting sequence, not an automatic repair or guaranteed fix.
  1. Record exactly where the workflow fails.
  2. Run a small test on the official playground.
  3. Change one relevant condition and compare.
  4. Report the reproducible result without personal data.

When to wait or ask for support

If your platform is excluded or the switch is absent after an ordinary update, follow Opera’s release information instead of forcing hidden settings. If a supported configuration repeatedly fails, use Opera’s official support route with the steps, error text and environment. Redact personal data from screenshots. A useful report says what you expected and what actually happened; it does not need your account password or an unedited browser profile.

Can GX Control make local AI faster?

There is no universal speed guarantee. Very restrictive resource limits may affect browser work. Note your existing settings and assess a single relevant change instead of maximizing every control.

Should I reinstall the browser first?

Not before checking support, the download state and the exact failing tool. Reinstallation may not address the cause and can disrupt settings you want to keep.
